Organic Living Program
St. Matthew’s Organic Living Program strives to teach young Montessorians a modern version of care of the environment, and care of self. St. Matthew’s students help maintain the school’s organic garden at recess, learning the importance and sustainability of pure living. Students participate in the Friday chef school where we use organic fruits and vegetables seasonally harvested from the garden to compliment and cook delicious lunches for their friends. Each day a child volunteers as snack host for their classroom, bringing in healthy organic food for their classmates.
The school has instituted a recycling program, teaching children about reducing their carbon footprint on the earth. Even the school’s Friday Chef School Program, has jumped onboard; serving food “family style” and using stainless steel cups.
St. Matthew’s transitioned to FDA approved green organics cleaning products and hasn’t looked back. The children help take care of their environment and, therefore, have an ownership of their classroom, and an integral part of their classwork.
St. Matthew’s is excited to showcase a school-wide Science Fair, Earth Day and Blessing of the Seeds celebration!
“At St. Matthew’s, learning to be good stewards of the beautiful earth that God has given us is paramount. Following Maria Montessori’s model of caring for our environment lends itself easily to our school-wide philosophy of care.” — Ms. Marie, Director of School
